We’ve all grown accustomed to having indoor plumbing systems that work without a hitch. What happens when you have a problem with your plumbing system?

Do you feel frustrated, upset, concerned, and in a bad mood because your plumbing system is acting up? There is no shame in that. Many people feel upset when they have plumbing issues.

At Snell Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning we would like to help you avoid plumbing problems by offering these tips to maintain your home’s plumbing system.

Be on the Lookout

Be alert to signs of potential plumbing failures. Leaking faucets, damp cabinets, rocking toilets or dripping refrigerators all signal problems that need immediate attention.

In addition to leaks, make sure to look at your drains. If you notice that your sinks aren’t draining fast enough, there could be a block. If you wait until the drain is completely clogged before you call a plumber, you’ll be stuck with a difficult job and a hefty bill. You can buy drain cleaner at your local supermarket to unclog minor drains.

Fix Problems Early

If you notice any leaks from your faucet, take care of them promptly. A leaky faucet can be an annoyance, but there are more problems than just dealing with it. For example, the moisture from the leak could produce mold and mildew. See if a simple tightening of the faucet fixes it.

Shut it Down

If your plumbing system fails, you should locate the main shut-off valve for the home water supply. If it’s in a dark, hidden, or hard-to-reach place, gather any tools you’ll need for a quick shut-off, and store them nearby.

Additionally, know how to shut off water to your home’s sinks, toilets, washing machines and water-using appliances like the refrigerator’s icemaker. Knowing off to turn off the water to different areas in you home could help save you a lot of cleaning up if there is major flooding.
